Ambulance Captains: Adrienne Beckham and frank (Jimmy) Handziak

The Sugar Island Ambulance Department is staffed with Michigan-licensed Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel. The Department meets monthly to provide continuing education on medical procedures, equipment, and EMS responsibilities. While we are an Island-based EMS Corps with volunteer Sugar Island resident crew members, we are augmented with Lake Superior State University Paramedic and Fire academy students. This allows these students to be part of a paid crew, and and provides real world experiences in an active EMS agency. The Sugar Island EMS Corp is a part of the Eastern Upper Penninsula Chippewa County Mutual Aid Agreement for EMS agencies and responds to a number of medical, trauma, fire incidents, and other emergency situations on Sugar Island.
